Explaining Phrases and Clauses

Phrases and Clauses

My colleague, Nidaa , is teaching English subject for the students  in the Faculty of  Veterinary this year instead of me. She asked me to teach her the  types of “Phrases and Clauses” to teach her students.

Our colleague, Soha, who is a graduate student having master in Linguistics, wants to be trained. I trained them many times when they are free of the courses they teach. Sometimes Nidaa sits with me alone as she has to teach the students each week.

Nidaa wanted me to revise with her but we could not have the suitable time as we have different courses at different times.

Pronouncing the “S” and “ED” Suffixes

It was my third time to meet Miss Rania sand Miss Azza and the fourth one to train in “ElNour & ElAml Charity” for the Blind in Mansoura.

They asked to go on the professional training and particularly Grammar and Phonetics as Rania is a teacher and Azza, the contact sighted person wants to give English private lessons.

This time I taught them the different sounds of the “s” and “ed” suffixes. Although they studied them in the faculty as undergraduates, they appear to know them for the first time. This is the main problem of teaching /learning in Egypt; a lot of teachers teach what the students are going to have for the exams not for the language itself.

Methodology Training

Miss Eman is a graduate of the Faculty of Arts, Oriental Studies Dept. However, she taught English to KG kids. She is a private teacher teaching English lessons. She wants to develop her teaching and language skills. I started with her giving her Educational Methodology.

As I mentioned before,  a lot of the teachers are always graduates of Faculty of Arts , and Science who have not studied Teaching Methodology. and Even those who studied Methodology need to remember and update their information concerning new ways of teaching , interactive classes, micro teaching, student centered learning , etc… . I start with ” Objectives and Processes” as the “lesson plan” is consisted of these two main components.

Date: September 11th 2017

Time: 11:00 am- 12:00 p.m.

Type of training: A Presentation about the Lesson’s “Objectives and Processes”

Avoiding Common Mistakes while Learning/Teaching English Language

It was my second time to meet Miss Rania sand Miss Azza and the third time to train in “ElNour & ElAml Charity” for the Blind in Mansoura.

They asked to go on the professional training and particularly Grammar and Phonetics as Rania is a teacher and Azza, the contact sighted person wants to give English private lessons.

I prefer each time to start with the common mistakes concerning vocabulary, grammar, speaking/sounds of the letters “th, p, ch, ed, …etc.”. I explained some of the differences between similar tenses: present simple, present continuous, … and so on. During our session other teacher needed the place for the private lesson , so we had to resume in an office. They also talked to me again about the problems they face concerning typing their materials in Braille.

TOEFL Professional Development

I continued the PD for my colleagues. They wanted to know how I teach the local TOEFL Structure and Written Expression.

My colleagues need to understand the grammar properly. They teach grammar in their general and conversation levels. Moreover, they need it for taking the TOEFL Test as they need it for their master degree.

Confusing Vocabulary and Grammar

Confusing Vocabulary and Grammar, PD

I tried to show them that they ought to take care of the common mistakes that their learners of general and conversation levels may. These confusing vocabulary and grammar are the base of our work. Words as ‘mistress’ shows that there are different meaning for the same word.

They were astonished as they had the same problem themselves.

English for Maths

Training teachers and undergraduates to teach Maths in English, I and my colleague, Ahmed Abdelghani, started a new course “English For Maths” which lasts for 20 hours. Each one of us will trains them for 10 hrs.

I entered with Ahmed after agreeing that I would attend his session to give him my feedback. In order to get a training certificate, they had to present demos after preparing them.

The trainees have to give the demo from 15 to 20 minutes as a part of a lesson. The trainer and some of the attendees try to act out as students who were naughty, lazy …etc.
